A 19-year-old Cairns woman and her partner face court on criminal abortion charges. The couple are believed to be the first in Queensland in 50 years to face criminal abortion charges.
Ms Leach allegedly successfully used misoprostol to induce a miscarraige at 60 days, As a result of the charges, Cairns gynaecologist Caroline de Costa, the first Australian doctor to gain permission to prescribe the controversial abortion drug RU486, has been forced to withdraw her service due to possible legal repercussions.
Medical abortion is a safe option but until the State Government reforms the law, Queensland doctors and their patients risk prosecution and jail for involvement with non-surgical abortion.

A District Court jury in far north Queensland has found a Cairns couple accused of procuring an illegal abortion not guilty.
The Queensland government need to change the legislation to make safe access to abortions in al states for women of all ages. This issue has to be talked about and decriminalised for every woman.
