If you choose to progress with the medical termination, you will take the first dose of medication with the doctor. This first dose of medication is called Mifepristone, and this stops the pregnancy from being viable.
You will be provided with an instruction sheet to take home with details on when to take the second dose. The second dose of medication is called Misoprostol and this needs to be taken 24 - 48 hours after the first dose. Misoprostol causes contractions which start the shedding of the uterus lining (i.e. the medication starts the miscarriage process).
If you are wanting an IUD, Implanon, or Depo injection, you will have to wait until you experience your first period following the termination. This will occur approximately 4 - 6 weeks after the medical termination.
The pregnancy is usually expelled within 4 - 6 hours after taking the Misoprostol.
